Canlubang’s strong homestretch finish keys its fourth straight senior crown

DAVAO CITY – Tommy Manotoc, Luigi Yulo and Rolando Viray came up with a blazing homestretch finish with 146 points yesterday to key Canlubang Golf and Country’s most nerve-frazzling victory in the Philippine Airlines Interclub Seniors’ championship.

Once again, Manotoc played the hero’s hole after he birdied three of the last five holes to shoot a four over par 76 or 50 points at the Apo Golf and Country Club course to give the Laguna sweet swingers their fourth straight crown and 12 th since 1987.

Viray backed up Manotoc with 49 points and Yulo contributed 47. Together with their first round 140 at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club, 142 at Apo and 153 back at Palos Verdes, Cangolf wound up with 581.
Luisita Golf and Country Club closed out with 139 on Jose “Pepot” Inigo’s 50, Bong Sison’s 45 and the 44 of Iggy Clavecilla to become victim of the tournament’s most exciting duel in 23 years.

San Miguel, Tarlac’s own sweet swingers staged a blazing start with 158 at Palos Verdes to erect a seemingly insurmountable 18-point lead. But they struggled with 129, 147 and 139 yesterday to settle for second place with 573.
“So far, this is our most satisfying win,” said team owner Yulo. “Coming from 18 points down after the first round, five after day two and finally wresting the lead by a point with 18 holes left is tough.: “This is our biggest win.”
Asked to describe the drama that enveloped the four-day duel, Clavecilla answered: “It’s one sh… of a tournament. We played very good but those guys just played better. They deserved to win.”
So did Inigo, who calls Davao City home sweet home, Apo his home course and now on his 34 th year as PAL international flight purser. Together with his earlier effort of 53, he wound up with 153 to capture the 36-hole individual title.
Manotoc could have won it with rounds of 55 and 50 both at Apo . But since rules call for players to play both courses, he was not eligible.
“It’s all right,” he said. “In the tournament, the important thing is to win the team honors not the individual trophy. “See you Tuesday.”
He was referring to the 62 nd Men’s Regular championship which starts Wednesday also at Apo and Palos Verdes.
If Cangolf comes out on top again, it will become the first team ever to win the men’s regular and senior team titles four straight.
Alabang Country Club closed out with 139 to capture third place with 535 while the Manila Golf and Country Club came up with 120 and 504 to settle for fourth place.
Texas Golf Club made131 to take the next slot with 504, followed by Chamorro 90-416, Team Brookside 95-415, Mercedes Plantation 112-398, Fil-Am Golf of Florida 95-367, Pinoy Vancouver 79-273 and San Francisco Heritage 187.
