PhilAirlines: PAL says palace meet on ‘spin-off’ dispute, not new CBA

Philippine Airlines (PAL) said the scheduled meeting between the airline management and its ground crew union in Malacanang this Friday is part of the Palace dispute resolution mechanism and not a negotiation for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“The PAL Employees Association can interpret the Palace-initiated talks any way it wants, but the PAL management is not going there to discuss any CBA,” PAL president Jaime Bautista said.

He explained that the pending legal issues before Malacanang are: 1) whether the Office of the President can re-assume jurisdiction over the spin off issue which was twice recognized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as a valid exercise of management prerogative; and 2) PALEA’s appeal to reverse the said DOLE ruling allowing such spin off.

Bautista said that as clearly stated in Malacanang’s Order, the purpose of Friday’s conference is to explore avenues towards an amicable settlement of the labor dispute, and/or to elicit facts and information. “The labor dispute adverted to in the order is PALEA’s pending petition for intervention and not the union's request for commencement of the CBA negotiation,” he stressed.

While it’s true that he told PALEA leaders to submit their proposed panel members in preparation for a CBA negotiation, Bautista said this would not push through until after Malacanang has ruled on all pending issues before it.

“Pending final resolution of the most important legal issues in Malacanang, talks of a CBA negotiation would have to wait,” Bautista stressed.

By bringing up the supposed “finalization of the CBA” in Malacanang, Bautista said PALEA leaders are spreading “false hopes” among its members that PAL has abandoned its planned spin off. Besides, he stressed, PAL and its union must be able to negotiate a new CBA independently and without any government pressure or intervention.

“PAL’s position has remained unchanged: the spin-off is a necessary element of its survival strategy. But in deference to PALEA’s pending appeal in Malacanang, the spin-off’s implementation has been held in abeyance,” he explained.

Bautista said it would be absurd to negotiate a new CBA while a lot of legal questions are pending before the Office of the President. “What if the Palace ultimately decides in PAL’s favor? What happens to the new CBA? We believe that it’s best to negotiate a new bargaining agreement with those who would be left behind if the spin off is finally implemented,” he stressed.-Philippine Airlines

PhilAirlines: Barons itching for Seniors’ redemption

PhilAirlines: CANLUBANG is gearing up for a tough Seniors battle in the coming Philippine Airlines Interclub in Northern Mindanao as the Sugar Barons aim to reclaim the crown they lost to Luisita in the final day last year in Negros.

“We have basically the same lineup but we aim to finish strong this time,” stalwart Luigi Yulo said, minutes before going out for practice at Cangolf’s South course yesterday. “They (Luisitans) got us last year and we want to improve on that.”

Starring Francis Gaston, Luisita came from behind in the final day at Marapara to nip the Sugar Barons and win its 14th Senior title, the most by any team in the rich history of the Interclub.

Tommy Manotoc, the ageless wonder who has spearheaded Cangolf in many Interclub wars counting glorious Men’s stints, will again be at the forefront of the Sugar Barons’ charge at both the Del Monte and Pueble de Oro courses.

The 61-year-old many-time Philippine team member and now National Golf Association of the Philippines director has not slowed down a bit and is itching to put the elder Barons in the hunt once again in Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.

Senior play takes the lid off of the 64th running of the country’s most prestigious amateur team event on Feb. 17 and the Barons are bracing up for another down-the-wire showdown with the Luisitans.

Former Asia-Pacific champion Iggy Clavecilla, sophomore Herminio Maravilla and Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia will continue to be the foundations of the Luisita charge.

No other team is expected to crash the Luisita-Canlubang party in Mindanao with the Barons to welcome back World Amateur veteran Dave Hernandez, former Philippine Amateur champ Rolly Viray and Jose Mari Gonzales.

Senior play will have four players seeing action with the top three scores counting in the team event. Players who play in both courses will be eligible for the individual championship.

This year’s competition is backed by platinum sponsors Boeing, Airbus, Radio Mindanao Network, Business Mirror and Interactive Broadcast Media (DWWW).

Major sponsors are People Asia, 105.1 Crossover , GE Aviation and Traversing the Orient.

PhilAirlines: PAL inflight magazine cops best ASEAN photo prize

PhilAirlines: Manila – A dramatic shot of a lone diver seemingly about to be engulfed by a swarm of sardines has won for Philippine Airlines’ inflight magazine Mabuhay its latest award for “Best ASEAN Tourism Photo” during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Tourism Forum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last month.
Taken in the azure waters in Pescador Island’s marine park off Moalboal, Cebu, the photo by veteran underwater photographer Wowie Wong, published in Mabuhay’s September 2010 issue, depicts a phenomenon known to divers as a “sardine run,” where millions of shimmering silver fish suddenly appear and descend on the reef.

The massive school attracts not just fishermen, but sea turtles and thresher sharks, too, which all come to feast on the overflowing mackerel buffet.  It’s a stunning sight and divers the world over flock to Pescador Island to witness one of nature’s most impressive displays.

Wong, a dive master, captured the amazing scene with his Canon 5D Mark II one summer day when he descended just 80 feet down.  “Shooting underwater is totally different from shooting above water,” he says.  “Once you jump in, there’s no such thing as changing lenses, batteries or media cards when you need to.”
Pescador, a small limestone island in the TaƱon Strait off the southwestern coast of Cebu, has been described as “every diver’s dream.”  It is rated one of the top dive sites in the Philippines.  Its waters harbor some of the greatest biodiversity in the world, with over 2,500 species of fish.

Wong’s winning photo continues a successful tradition by Mabuhay in the ASEAN tourism awards derby.  Since the annual honors were first handed out in 1987, the magazine has won the top prize for its photos nine times –
 in 1990, 1991, 1994, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011, and for its travel articles thrice – in 1993, 1994 and 2002.  In addition, PAL bagged the “Best ASEAN Poster” award in 1988.

The awards are handed out annually by the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), which brings together both public- and private-sector tourism industry players throughout the 10 ASEAN member states.  ASEANTA is considered the most influential tourism organization in the region.-Philippine Airlines

PhilippineAirlines: Luisita – underdog at PAL Seniors Interclub

Luisita is fielding the same players that ended Canlubang’s four-year reign in the Philippine Airlines Senior Interclub golf championships, but rates itself as the underdog when the annual event goes to Northern Mindanao on Feb. 16.
“Canlubang is definitely the favorite,” said Iggy Clavecilla, one of Luisita’s top guns. “I’ve played with some of them and they’re playing great.”

Clavecilla mentioned Tommy Manotoc, Dave Hernandez and Jose Mari Gonzales of Canlubang as the men to watch in the four-day, four-to-play, three-to-count team event.

Last year, Luisita rode on the heroics of Francis Gaston to score a come-from-behind victory over Canlubang in Bacolod City.

Gaston, rebounding from a poor round at the Binitin course, matched par at Marapara, his home course, beating Manotoc by four shots in the final round.

Aside from Clavecilla and Gaston, the other Luisita returnees are Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia, Pepot Inigo, Bong Sison, Carlo Gamban, Lino Magpantay and Herminio Maravilla.

Clavecilla, one of the team’s sparkplugs, admitted that his game is not 100 percent, adding that some of his teammates are also busy with work.

“Richie, for instance, has not been playing golf like he used to since his appointment as PSC chairman,” said Clavecilla.

Luisita is the most successful seniors’ team with 14 championships.

The event, a prelude to the regular men’s event, will be played at Pueblo de Oro in Cagayan de Oro and Del Monte course in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Nearly half of the 89-team seniors’ field are from overseas with teams from Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Vancouver, Guam, Saipan and Tokyo as new entrants.

After a two-day break, action in the men’s regular event kicks off on Feb. 23 with Canlubang facing a stiff challenge following the adoption of a new handicapping system.

Out to challenge Canlubang’s five-year grip of the title are The Country Club, Manila Southwoods and Del Monte.
