Canlubang’s young ones take center stage

DAVAO CITY – After the Canlubang Golf and Country Club’s young once accomplished half of their mission, the young ones take over in their first-ever double four-peat bid in the Philippine Airlines Interclub championships here.
Luigi Yulo, the Canlubang team manager, is expected to announce tomorrow members of his troop who will start as the 62 nd men’s regular tournament reels off at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country.

But Freddie Mendoza, Yulo’s opposite number, said yesterday The Country Club team will celebrate its debut in what is considered as the national team championship with Anthony Fernando, Dante Beciera, Jobim Carlos, Tonlits Asistio and Joey Huerva.

A Canlubang victory will give the Sugar Barons from Laguna their fourth consecutive men’s regular championship division trophy to go with their fourth straight title in the seniors division last week.

“I know no team has ever won both divisions four years straight,” said Yulo yesterday. “But like we did last week, we will be giving our best shots to do that against a new set of rivals.”

What Yulo’s troop did last Sunday was to shoot a final round 146 at Apo for 581 to beat Luisita Golf and Country Club by eight to capture the Seniors championship.
A The Country Club victory will equal Cangolf’s feat of winning in its debut in 1977 in the series that began in 1948.

“It will be an interesting tournament,” Mendoza said yesterday as he and coach Bong Lopez treated their chargers to a catfish lunch downtown. “Canlubang has the stronger team based on its 10 players, but we have a stronger team based on five.”

Completing the Country Club’s team are Ferdie Aunzo, Rufino Bayron, Art Arbole, Peter Villaber and J.R. Tanpinco.

Carrying the Canlubang colors are Jonel Aba, Mario Labajo, Joseph Labajo, Zanie Boy Gialon, Paul Echaves, Jessie Balasabas, Alvin Engino and Mark Fernando.

Another team expected to provide another serious challenge is Manila Southwoods with Erwin Vinluan, Jong Min-kim, Jun Jun Plana, Miko Yee, Miggy Yee, Justin Limjap, Park Jung-Soo, Joseph Tambunting, Allan Guy and playing skipper Jeric Hechanova.
